A surname must be entered in full.
If a hash or number sign ("#") is added to the end of an entered surname the program will return details of individuals that have alternative surnames to that entered i.e. if 'Mac...' is entered the program will return details of those with both 'Mac...' and 'Mc...' first surname characters. If 'MacGilvray' is entered all those with known alternative spellings of 'MacGilvray' and / or associated surnames will be listed.If a question mark ("?") is added to the end of the surname, a list of all the alternative surnames used for the search will be displayed. | | An 'A' in this field will return all those with the intial letter of their First Name equal to 'A'; i.e. Alan, Ann, Anne, Angus, Archibald, Arthur, etc. It is equivalent to 'A*'. Helpful hint. Entering a First Name will speed up processing time as well as reduce the number of matching enteries. |
